Stop dreaming, make a decision
I come across so many people who say “I wish I travelled the world when I was younger” “I wish I could do what you are doing” I tell you something what I think, If you don’t do it, you don’t really, REALLY want it! I know there is an unspoken rule that we’re supposed to go to school, graduate, get a job, buy a house, get married, get our 2,5 kids and live happily ever after, but fuck society! Dare to be yourself, and live the life YOU want! Your dreams, your hopes, your desires.. You will be happier, trust me. And If you wanna travel the world, I’m convinced that you can make it work. Let me help you!
MAKING THE DECISION IS THE HARDEST PART
Life on the road is a lot easier and cheaper than you think. It’s the decision to take the step out of your comfort zone is the hardest part. It’s a life change and it’s pretty damn scary! Especially when you love your job, you love your life and everyone and everything in it. If you don’t.. If you don’t love what you do, then it’s easier, then I would consider doing something about it. Right now. Leave your old life for a new one.
For me it was that I couldn’t live with asking myself the “IS THIS IT” question all the time and the doubt if the “real world” was, at that time, my thing yes or no.. The thoughts of having regrets later, that I didn’t take the chance was for me more scary than leaving everything behind.. So I decided to take the risk, I quit my job, sold everything I owned, got rid of all the unnecessary insurances and stepped out of my comfort zone in the hope miracles would happen. And they did.
If you decide not to go, cheers to you for your strength, finding happiness, following your dreams, and being passionate about a job that fulfills you.
If you don’t go, you’ll never know!
Once you made the decision get inspired! Talk to people who are doing it, or did it. You’re not the first one! I’m also not the first one. Read travel blogs, there are a million out there (but also keep on reading mine 😉 ). Reading and talking about it will give you the courage to book your ticket and make it happen. Sometimes just knowing that someone has been on the same path before you, will give you the extra boost of confidence to follow your dreams…
After having the idea of traveling the world, I became obsessed with it. I started to spend every free minute on the Internet, looking for information about long term travelling. I googled the cheapest countries, the best beaches, the best place to do my divemaster.. I made plans where I wanted to go, set up a bucket list and looked for cheap flights to go as far as possible.
When it comes to planning, generally I like to have a rough idea of my activities or destinations but leave all the space for movement as plans change, in my case, all the time. I probably change my plans more often then my clothes. Some of my best experiences I’ve had while travelling have been the things I never planned on doing. When you don’t plan, you’re more open for whatever comes along and there will be more opportunities.
Get inspired. Ask questions. Get excited. Go.
Hi! I’m Maartje, a Dutchie who left her home to explore the world slowly, thoroughly and never came back. I’m just a little obsessed with travelling, photography, scuba diving and enjoying life.
