The Rickshaw Run in pictures

This summer I was working in a bar in the Netherlands where my boss asked me what was left on my bucket list? I immediately replied with: “The Rickshaw Run”. He knew where I was talking about and said “let’s do it”! There were a couple of drinks involved and the next day I thought for sure this will never happen but when I saw him again, he did research, he was still excited and we signed up! 3 months later we started with 85 other Rickshaw Run teams in the Rajasthan Desert on the 1st of April 2017. We drove through remote rural villages, off-road tracks, the world’s most dangerous highways, stunning coastal roads, mountains and a bit of jungle in our own pimped Rickshaw to Cochin! When you’re thinking about doing it, just do it!

THE FIRST DAY WE TOOK THE WALKING ROUTE ON GOOGLE MAPS. FUNNY, BUT NOT THE BEST IDEA.

*We drove 12 hours and we didn’t even make 250k, what we were suppose to drive each day.. GREAT first day of the Rickshaw Run! 😉

DRIVING EARLY MORNING IS THE BEST.

*It’s not that hot yet and there are not a lot of people on the streets..

.

AND SUNRISES ARE ALWAYS BEAUTIFUL..

.

IN THE DAY TIME IT CAN GET PRETTY HECTIC.

.

Rickshaw Run go slow

.

WE DROVE ON SOME OF THE WORLDS MOST DANGEROUS HIGHWAYS..

.

.

AND GOT STUCK IN TRAFFIC.

.

SHARED THE ROAD WITH TRUCKS, MOTORBIKES AND BUSSES

.

.

BUT ALSO WITH COWS, GOATS AND CAMELS..

.

.

OH, AND SOME CUTE WATER BUFFALO’S

.

Rickshaw Run cows on the road

.

WE HAD TO TAKE SOME HIGHWAYS/ MAIN ROADS

*Because we needed to drive an average of 250 kilometers a day and with only backroad we were not going to make it.. Trust me!

.

BUT THE BEST STORIES WERE MADE ON THE ROAD LESS TRAVELED

.

AND WHILE WE DROVE THROUGH SMALL LITTLE CITY STREETS..

.

.

WE GOT STUCK

*Look at me helping the kids pushing the Rickshaw! Okay, first a selfie!

.

WE BROKE DOWN

.

.

AND MOST OF THE TIMES WE COULD FIX IT OURSELVES WITH OUR LEATERMAN GADGETS

*Read: Bram could fix it 🙂

.

.

BUT SOMETIMES WE NEEDED A LOCAL MECHANIC

*We paid not even 5 euro for some parts and men hours..+ free coffee and cigarettes! (While I don’t smoke…)

.

.

WE ALSO GOT STOPPED BY THE POLICE SEVERAL TIMES, BUT WE PAID THEM OFF WITH A SELFIE

*The amount of selfies people took of us were out of control. Dangerous too while driving! No wonder more people died taking selfies in India than anywhere else in world!

.

.

THE BACK ROADS BROUGHT US TO SOME OF THE BEST VIEWS

.

Rickshaw Run awesome view

.

IN A COUNTRY WITH BILLIONS OF PEOPLE, WE SUDDENLY FELT LIKE WE WERE THE ONLY ONES THERE!

.

Rickshaw Run no mountain to high

.

THE MAIN ROADS WERE MORE BUSY AND LESS EXCITED. BUT THE GOOD THING WAS THAT THERE WERE COFFEE DAYS!

*I can’t even explain how happy I was when I saw a Coffee day early in the morning.. REAL coffee!! 🙂

.

Rickshaw Run coffee day

*These are not my legs.. 🙂

.

AND THE OCCASIONAL MAC DONALDS, WITH THE DELICIOUS MAHARAJA BURGER!

*Indian food is amazing but you do get over the curries and masala. I avoid Mac’s in other countries but to eat something familiar in India is really nice..

.

.

WE DROVE IN THE NIGHT ONCE, AND NEVER AGAIN.

*You’re at the same height as the lights of the trucks so you can’t see shit, nor cows.

.

.

AND AFTER A DAY OF DRVING IT’S BETTER TO WATCH THE SUNSET FROM YOUR POOL WITH A KINGFISHER ANYWAY..

OR MEETING UP WITH OTHER TEAMS

*Through the Rickshaw Run App we could keep up with other teams and it was nice to get some recommendations along the way. Sometimes we ended up with over 10 other teams in one hotel!

WE MADE SOME GOOD FRIENDS 🙂

😀 Maarrrrr het lijkt me zo gaaf!

Gewoon doen!!

The adventurists organise amazing adventures, you should check them out if you’re interested! And see here my pictures of the Mongol Rally – A rally in a crappy little car, driving 20.000+ km from London to Mongolia!

Hi! I’m Maartje, a Dutchie who left her home to explore the world slowly, thoroughly and never came back. I’m just a little obsessed with travelling, photography, scuba diving and enjoying life.

1 crappy little car, no tools, no backup, no support, 20.000 kilometers, 17 countries, 23 breakdowns, 2 seas and 9 river crossings. The Mongol Rally! I'm still pretty proud we made it across mountains, deserts and the steppe of Europe and Asia in 33 days! Good...
