The Mongol Rally in pictures

1 crappy little car, no tools, no backup, no support, 20.000 kilometers, 17 countries, 23 breakdowns, 2 seas and 9 river crossings. The Mongol Rally! I’m still pretty proud we made it across mountains, deserts and the steppe of Europe and Asia in 33 days! Good memories, good times! And pictures say more than a thousand words…

BUY A CAR, DRESS TO IMPRESS AND GO!

OH, FIND SOME STRANGERS FIRST (IF NONE OF YOUR FRIENDS WANTS TO JOIN)

I met Scott for one day in Jordan and I met Kristina and Sora the day of the Mongol Rally launch party! If they’re willing to do the Mongol Rally, they must be cool! 🙂

DURING THE MONGOL RALLY THERE IS NO SET ROUTE

SO YOU CAN GO TO ALL YOUR FAVOURITE EUROPEAN CITIES

One day we woke up in Vienna, had lunch in Budapest and dinner in Belgrade.

AND DRIVE THE MOST SCENIC ROUTES

YOU CAN EVEN MAKE SOME TIME TO FLY OVER CAPPADOCIA

It was on my bucket list for a while and since we were so close, we made some time during the Mongol Rally to do a sunrise air balloon ride…

OR VISIT SOME LONG LASTING FRIENDS IN ARMENIA

It was a 12hour drive out of the way but we needed to go to Yerevan in Armenia to meet this girl! 16 years ago she went on a homestay holiday to the Netherlands and stayed with my Family! On the Mongol Rally we got welcomed with a big feast of delicious food and we met her friends and family!

AND WHEN WE ARRIVED IN AZERbribeJAN

There is a lot of corruption in Azerbaijan and we got stopped many times

THERE WAS NO OTHER WAY THAN TAKING THE BOAT

Because Scott, Sora and Kristina are American, they’re not allowed in Iran and I only had a double entry visa for Russia. So we needed to cross the Caspian Sea on a cargo ship.

WE CAMPED A LOT TO SAVE MONEY

AND SOMETIMES JUST BECAUSE WE BROKE DOWN AND DIDN’T HAD ANOTHER CHOICE

*Yes this is how I look in the morning…

AND OUR ‘EDDY’ BROKE DOWN. A LOT

I remember the mechanic saying somewhere still in Europe “hahaha nah, this is never gonna make it to Mongolia”. He thought we were insane.

BUT IT ALSO WENT THROUGH A LOT

*This is a screenshot from a video, but you’ll get the idea!

LUCKILY WE CONVOYED WITH OUR SWEDISH, HAPPEN TO BE ‘MECHANIC’ FRIENDS

We probably made it because of them… Thanks boys… I know you’re still reading my posts! 😉

YOU STILL NEED TO DRIVE THROUGH RUSSIA

The Mongol Rally doesn’t finish in Mongolia anymore. The finish line is moved from Ulaanbaatar to Ulan Ude.

Would you dare!?

The adventurists organise amazing adventures, you should check them out if you’re interested! And see here my pictures of the Rickshaw Run – A 3000+ km rally in a tuk tuk from North to South India!

And commenting is cool!

Hi! I’m Maartje, a Dutchie who left her home to explore the world slowly, thoroughly and never came back. I’m just a little obsessed with travelling, photography, scuba diving and enjoying life.

I’d rather look back at my life and say, “I can‘t believe I did that,” instead of saying, “I wish I did that.”
